Discover the history and stories of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā), the site of the significant 1864 Battle of Gate Pā. Walk from the reserve entrance to the flagpole at the top of the pā – between 10am and 12pm you will hear about the battle and explore the interpretation panels and carved pou along the roadside. Discover the reserve’s notable trees, including kauri planted to mark the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the battle, and a magnificent Moreton Bay fig. See a replica tūpara (double- barrelled musket), said to have belonged to the guide’s great-great-grandfather. Visit St George’s Church to view the stained-glass window commemorating water being given to wounded soldiers on the battlefield. The visit also includes the model of the proposed New Zealand Wars Centre and a memorial to Tauranga-based Armed Constabulary members killed by Te Kooti at Opepe, near Taupō.
