Debbie Tipuna is an award-winning illustrator and visual artist whose richly detailed gouache paintings reflect a deep connection to Aotearoa. Her work is vibrant and narrative-led, often featuring botanical themes interwoven with Māori design elements.
Whether she’s illustrating children’s books or creating multimedia pieces that explore whakapapa and identity, Debbie’s art is always layered with meaning, memory, and heart. She has illustrated eight children’s books, completed a prestigious artist residency in Southern Italy, and been a finalist in numerous national art awards, including the 2025 National Contemporary Art Award.
Her creative practice spans both illustrative and conceptual work, and her studio offers a range of original pieces, fine art prints, cards, and books for sale. Debbie’s studio and gallery are housed in two black cabins on her Maungatapu property, nestled in a garden with views across Rangataua Bay and Opopoti Marae. Visitors can browse, chat, picnic on the lawn, and go in the draw to win an original artwork.
