Malcolm Bowling’s work captures quiet, fleeting moments of the natural world, whether it’s the stillness of a rural landscape, the tension in an animal’s movement, or the gentle flutter of a bird in its daily rhythm. His paintings evoke atmosphere and emotion, drawing the viewer into scenes where light, mood, and nature converge.
Working from photographic references, Malcolm digitally composes his scenes before beginning the slow, intentional layering of paint to achieve his signature depth and realism. Each piece is a careful study in both precision and feeling.
Originally from South Africa, Malcolm brings a background as a former game ranger and gallery owner to his current practice in Aotearoa. Since relocating to Tauranga in 2021, he has transformed a garden studio at his home into a peaceful, light-filled space where he now paints full time. The studio, complete with a large gallery window and surrounded by greenery, offers visitors a glimpse into the artist’s process and the natural world that inspires it.
